New York Eats · since 1762, checked October 2026

New York's oldest restaurants

Fraunces Tavern in Manhattan has stood at its address since 1762, The Tavern at Beekman Arms in Rhinebeck since 1766, and Sherwood Inn in Skaneateles since 1807. They lead the 100 places on our hand-checked lists whose year at their current address we could pin down, oldest first.

What a year here means

The year is when the place opened where it stands today, from its own history page or local reporting; where the only source is the place itself, the note says so. A move resets the clock, so a famous name that changed addresses can sit below a younger neighbor. The year describes the address, not the cooking, and only hand-checked places carry one, not the rest of the app's 61,100 restaurants.

How the list was built: In October 2026 we looked up every place here in a 2025 or 2026 source (the shop's own site or menu, a dated post, local reporting, or a tourism listing) and matched its address. No current source, no listing. Review sites played no part, and the order is by years at the same address, not by anyone's rating. Menus and hours move, so call first.

About the inspection results

NYC letter grades are the NYC Health Department's own, labeled official and shown with the date of the graded inspection: A, B or C, posted at the door. N means not yet graded, Z grade pending, and P grade pending on re-opening after a closure. We never compute a grade from an inspection score. Source: NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, NYC Open Data, records through Sep 29, 2026; the full history is on the Health Department's ABCEats site.

Outside New York City there is no official restaurant grade, and we don't make one. Where shown, the date and counts are from the New York State Department of Health's latest inspection on file (health.data.ny.gov), records through Sep 24, 2026. In NYSDOH's words:

“Any use of this data to develop a restaurant grading system is not supported or endorsed by the New York State Department of Health.”

Any analyses, interpretations or conclusions here are ours, not NYSDOH's. Places are never ordered by these counts.

Suffolk County publishes the violations its inspectors cited each year, with no score or grade; an inspection that found nothing isn't on the list. Counts shown are violations cited in 2025, the latest year published (Suffolk County Department of Health Services, opendata.suffolkcountyny.gov).

Erie County, Buffalo included, posts its restaurant inspections only through a search-only lookup, so there is no inspection data for its places here.
